Itinerary
Days 1-2. Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai
Begin your journey in Chiang Rai, a city where tradition and bold creativity collide. Visit the dazzling White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), the jewel-toned Blue Temple, and the thought-provoking Black House Museum. Climb to Wat Huay Pla Kang, where a towering white goddess statue overlooks the valleys, then explore the night bazaar for music and street food.

Days 3-4. Golden Triangle

Golden Triangle
Drive north to the fabled Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar converge over the Mekong and Ruak Rivers. Stand at the viewpoint, take a boat ride along the river, and visit the excellent Hall of Opium Museum, which tells the complex history of this once-infamous trade route. You can have an ethical elephant experience at Anantara Golden Triangle.

Days 4-5. Farmstay at Tea or Coffee Plantation

Option A: Tea Hills & Yunnanese Heritage
Journey into the hills around Chiang Rai to a little village, once a Chinese settlement, and now home to sprawling tea plantations. Wander Yunnanese markets, sip oolong tea at the source, and walk through terraced hillsides covered in emerald green. A farmstay here offers both views and immersion into the rhythms of highland life.
Option B: Coffee at the Source
Continue to a region emerging as one of Asia’s premier coffee destinations. Here, women-led cooperatives and small growers welcome visitors to taste single-origin arabica, meet farmers, and walk the plantations. Staying overnight on a coffee farm allows you to join harvests, roasting sessions, and sunrise tastings high above the valleys.
You can also extend one day and do both!

Days 5-6. Phu Chi Fa

Phu Chi Fa
Have an overnight mountain stay. At dawn, climb to the peak of Phu Chi Fa, a dramatic limestone cliff where the sun rises over a sea of clouds rolling across the Laos border—a sight that feels like a dream.
Days 6-7. Phayao

Phayao
Arrive at the tranquil shores of Kwan Phayao Lake, one of northern Thailand’s hidden gems. Here life unfolds slowly—fishing boats drift across glassy waters, children cycle along the promenade, and restaurants serve tilapia fresh from the lake. It’s a perfect pause between journeys, with misty mountain views and golden sunsets that reflect in the water.

Days 7-9. Nan

Nan
Hidden near the Laos border, Nan is a quiet town with gilded temples, artistic murals, and an authentic pace of life. Visit Wat Phumin, famous for its storytelling murals, and explore weaving villages where the Tai Lue people keep their traditions alive. Day trips into Doi Phu Kha National Park offer forested trails, mountain vistas, and serene villages tucked into valleys untouched by tourism. Nan feels intimate and soulful, a window into the north as it once was.

Days 9-11. Sukhothai

Sukhothai
Step back to the 13th century in Thailand’s first capital. Rent a bicycle and explore moated temple ruins, serene Buddha statues, and lotus-filled ponds across the UNESCO-listed Sukhothai Historical Park. Sunrise among crumbling stupas is magical, as the morning light reflects in still waters. Sukhothai is both peaceful and majestic, a chance to experience history at a gentle pace.

Days 11-12. Lampang

Lampang
Often overlooked, Lampang is a gentle riverside town known for its horse-drawn carriages and Burmese-style temples. Visit Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, one of the oldest wooden temples in Thailand, then stroll along the Wang River to discover cafés, night markets, and laid-back local life. Lampang’s slower rhythm makes it a delightful pause before heading deeper into the mountains.

Days 12-17. Mae Hong Son loop

Mae Hong Son loop
The Mae Hong Son Loop winds through northern Thailand’s wildest landscapes—forested peaks, hidden valleys, and towns wrapped in morning mist. Discover Pai, a lively valley of hot springs, waterfalls, and mountain lookouts. From the cloud forests and royal pagodas of Doi Inthanon to the riverside calm of Mae Sariang, the route leads into a slower rhythm of life. In Mae Hong Son, Burmese-inspired temples glow at sunrise, while nearby Ban Rak Thai offers lakeside tea plantations and Yunnanese charm. More than a road trip, it’s a moving tapestry of culture, scenery, and serenity.

Days 17-19. Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai
Conclude in Chiang Mai, where ancient walls, bustling markets, and artisan villages converge with a cosmopolitan café culture. Visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep at sunrise, take a Thai cooking class, or wander the Old City’s temples and hidden courtyards. Evenings come alive in the Night Bazaar and Nimmanhaemin’s trendy streets. Chiang Mai is both vibrant and deeply rooted in tradition—the perfect finale to your northern journey.
